How Weather Can Affect Your Fiber Internet, and What to Do if it Goes Out

At Kudzu Networks, we’re proud to deliver lightning-fast fiber internet to our communities. While fiber is known for its reliability, even in tough weather, there are still times when Mother Nature can disrupt your connection.

How Weather Affects Fiber Internet

Fiber-optic cables are usually buried underground, which protects them from many of the issues that traditional cable or satellite internet faces. That means rain, snow, and even high winds usually won’t affect your service. Plus, because fiber cables are made of non-conductive materials like glass or plastic, lightning cannot travel through them, which makes fiber an even safer and more reliable choice.

However, severe storms can still cause outages – especially if:

  • Power lines are damaged or knocked down
  • Equipment like network hubs or power supplies are affected by lightning or flooding
  • Trees fall and damage lines or equipment

In many cases, it’s not the fiber lines themselves, it’s a related power issue.

What to Do if Your Internet Goes Out During a Storm (Visit our troubleshooting guide for step-by-step troubleshooting instructions.)

  1. Check for powerIf the power goes out, your internet equipment (such as your router or ONT) won’t work, even if the fiber connection itself is unaffected, unless you have an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to keep it running.
  2. Restart your equipment When the storm clears and power is back, unplug your router and modem, wait 30 seconds, and plug them back in.
  3. Report the outage If everything seems fine at home but your service still isn’t working, let us know. Reporting helps us track and resolve issues faster.
  4. Stay connected Follow Kudzu Networks on social media or check our outage updates online for the latest info during a weather event.

Fiber internet is built to be tough, and so are we. If a storm interrupts your service, our team will be working hard to get you back online as quickly as possible.

Stay safe, and as always – thank you for being part of the Kudzu Family!
